Cleaning advice for melamine tops

Reflection

Lady cleaning desk top

Polarization of the light: the fibers run into a certain direction to transport the resin to the ends of the tree. This is called the “woodgrain”; it reflects the light in different ways, depending on the angle from which you are viewing it. In that way it seems as if two adjacent surfaces of which the grain runs in different directions do not have the same color (e.g. desk with extension). You need to walk around it just to see how the light plays with the surface and notice that the gloss and color of the wood change.

Scratches

A pad adequately protects the wood from scratches and circles from glasses and cups. Lift the objects as much as possible to move them. Most scratches are the result of moving objects onto the surface of the furniture.

Plastic and gum

Some plastics contain components that should keep the material smooth. Objects with such components which are placed onto wood, could remove the shine or leave indelible prints. Avoid prolonged contact of plastic folders and files with wooden surfaces, the wood cannot “breathe”.

Effect of light - Patina

Like leather, wood changes over time : light (also moonlight) changes the appearance and gives it a so-called “patina”. Each wood sort changes in its own way : some will get a warm honey color, while others tend to get lighter or, on the contrary, darker. Do not forget to move from time to time objects and accessories which are placed onto the furniture. In that way you will avoid color differences which are the result of different exposure to light.

Avoid extreme temperatures and moisture

Remove stains

Use soapy water or water diluted with 50% alcohol.
Never use products containing silicone.

These cleaning instructions are for shutters, in particular for the following types :

  • SE 16 PVC uni, structure and pattern
  • SE 22 PVC uni, pattern and translucent
  • SE 4 PVC uni, structure and pattern
  • E4 PVC uni and pattern

Cleaning of the tambours is done with soapy water and a soft cloth.
The use of solvents such as acetone should be avoided because of the chemical interaction with PVC.
Cleaning using abrasive material is not permitted because of the risk of scratching the surface.

Cleaning advices for powder coating (epoxy)

It speaks for itself that the detergents and their surface treatment may not damage or impair the applied materials. Only neutral cleaning agents, with a pH between 6 and 8, are allowed. These cleaners should not cause scratches.

Cleaning with steel wool, sandpaper, solvents, etc. is also not permitted.
